10 Kitchen Gadgets That Actually Save You Time
Not every gadget earns its cabinet space. These are the ones that remove a genuine step from cooking, not just add a button to press.

Most "must-have kitchen gadget" lists mix in a few genuinely useful tools with a lot of novelty items destined for the back of a drawer. We wanted a shorter, stricter list: gadgets that remove an actual step, an actual worry, or an actual chunk of time from cooking — not just a new way to do something you were already fine at.
The test we used
A gadget earns a spot on this list if it answers yes to at least one of these:
- Does it prevent a mistake that's easy to make by hand? (Overcooked meat, inconsistent baking measurements.)
- Does it turn a multi-step process into one step?
- Does it replace a tool you'd otherwise need to buy separately?
The shortlist
A wireless meat thermometer. This is the single highest "time and stress saved per dollar" gadget in a kitchen. A wireless probe with a phone alert means you stop opening the oven to check, stop guessing, and stop overcooking the one expensive roast of the week.
A gram-precision kitchen scale. Volume measurements (cups, tablespoons) are notoriously inconsistent for baking. A connected scale with recipe scaling turns "why did this loaf come out dense" into a solved problem.
A sous vide circulator. We've written a full sous vide primer on this, but the short version: clip it to a pot, set a temperature, walk away. It's the closest thing to a "cook this perfectly, unattended" button that exists in a home kitchen.
A food processor with a wide feed tube. The pre-chopping step is what actually eats your prep time, not the processing itself. A wide chute is the detail that determines whether the processor gets used weekly or sits in a cabinet.
A guided knife sharpener. This one is less about saving time in a single session and more about compounding — a sharp knife is faster and safer for every cut, every day, for as long as you own it. A guided sharpening system makes maintaining that edge realistic without a decade of whetstone practice.
What we left off, on purpose
Anything single-purpose that only works for one narrow food (avocado slicers, strawberry hullers, banana holders) didn't make the cut. They might save ninety seconds on a rare occasion, but they cost you cabinet space every single day. If a knife, a peeler, or a spoon already does the job at 90% of the speed, that's the better trade.
